I have the book "Drawing realistic textures in pencil" by J.D. Hillberry. Is that book good for my 11-year old brother. He's just a begginer in drawing.
He have finished studying two books of simply drawing. I think that book is wonderful but may be too hard for a child to study. But that book is the only book about drawing in pencil I have now. I don\'t have any knowledge about drawing or painting to teach him. We live in a small village so there\'s no class of teaching drawing or painting but If there would be one, we just have not enough money to enroll in. Self-study with that book is quite convinient and help us save money.
So how about your ideas? Can we self-study that book? If you advise us to not self-study with that book because it is difficult, so we can quit to save our effort and time.
Thanks.

Hi, Piglet. Here are suggestions on books that I have personally. I am
no authority and what I may think would be very helpful and fun for your 11-yr old brother, someone else may disagree with, which is ok.
I also have to say that I think it's terrific that your brother has interest in learning to draw! There are lots of great books out there.
I would recommend "Drawing for Dummies" by Brenda Hoddinott, Wiley
Publishing, Inc.,2003. It is a wonderful, easy to follow instructional
drawing book and the title really means easy for everyone, regardless of skill level or age. It's a book I constantly refer to.
Another possibility would be any of Lee Hammond's books. They are also easy to follow and with fun drawing projects, depending upon your
brother's interest. Hope my suggestions are helpful.

Hi piglet!

I don't know this book, so don't know if it would be suitable. I do know you can learn a lot by only looking at other drawings, so it will shurely have some value.

An other thing I could suggest is checking out the link section of this site. There are some great resource on the net too.

Finally if you would be able to upload a drawing of your brother in the gallery, we might be able to give some advice.

Good luck!

btw moved this thread to the general chat forum, because I think it's more in place there.

Yes, Piglet, I too would like to see some of your brother's artwork. This is a good place for other's opinion, because they can see problem areas,
etc that he may not see, allowing improvement. It' s an encouraging environment, which is so needed when first learning.
